From "King Solomon's mind"
Cowardly Commish Plans to Diss Bonds
Well baseball season is around the corner, but MLB Commissioner Bud Selig got a head start on controversy.
So you won't show up the day Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's home run record? Are you kidding me? What a cowardly act.
And to compare this record to Roger Clemens winning his 300th game is so ridiculous that somebody should have slapped the commissioner for making the reference.
The commish (and baseball as a whole) ignored the effects of the dirty little secret - steroids running rampant in the game - for years. Now that the sport's most hallowed record is about to fall, Selig acts as if he has a problem with Bonds becoming the Home Run King.
Well, too late.
Be a man. Show up at the stadium and greet Bonds after he is mobbed by teammates at home plate. A few months after being named commissioner, you were there when Mark McGwire broke Maris' single-season record. And I know you and the other owners claim not to have noticed anything unusual about McGwire's physique at the time, but the dirty little secret is out.
Do what you would have done if you would have done the right thing years ago and cleaned up the sport. Maybe then, this would not have happened in 2007. Maybe it would have taken Bonds until 2009. Maybe he would never have reached Hammerin' Hank.
But it's too late for ifs, couldas and shouldas. The right thing is to treat Barry Bonds like baseball's new leader in career home runs, which he should become at some point this season.
The numbers don't lie.
